A few workers from a single South Carolina Starbucks location have filed a lawsuit against Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX). The corporation is being sued for slander because it handled a union demonstration. Despite that, Starbucks stock surged in the market.

In their case, the plaintiffs allege that on August 1, the coffee chain giant made comments to the police that falsely and intentionally characterized them as criminals for the “illegitimate ancillary goal” of stopping them from openly demonstrating. The manager of a Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) location called the police after an incident in which she said that employees would not let her leave unless they were given a pay rise and that one of them had physically attacked her.

In an online message published in August, Starbucks stock defended the shop manager, stated it was collaborating with law authorities, and said it was conducting its investigation.

“We completely recognize our partners’ right to organize,” the company said, “but no one is immune from the principles we have long held—that everyone in our shops should expect to be treated with decency and respect and work in a warm, inviting inclusive atmosphere.”

Starbucks’ original allegations that the protestors had kidnapped or assaulted the manager were ultimately disproved by the police inquiry.

This lawsuit is only the latest round in a drawn-out conflict between Starbucks stock and some of its shop workers. There have been elections at around 250 of the company’s 9K corporate-run U.S. shops over the last year, with both sides exchanging charges on the ballots.

Starbucks stock is up 2.37% during the lunch break on Monday, outperforming the retail sector’s average gain over the last six weeks, 90 days, and six months.
