Amazon’s deal to take over Thursday Night Football marked the first time the National Football League sold a game package exclusively for streaming. An agreement by Fox allowed Amazon to start its contract this fall, a year earlier than planned.

The National Football League’s preseason is currently in progress when the announcement is made. San Francisco 49ers vs. Houston Texans will be the first game that DirecTV will broadcast alongside Amazon Prime Video on Thursday.

The first streaming service with exclusive rights to a selection of NFL games is Amazon.

The pact was a part of an 11-year media rights agreement the NFL negotiated with media firms last year. These companies included NBCUniversal, owned by Comcast Corp., CBS Sports, owned by Paramount Corp., owned by Walt Disney Co., and owned by Fox Corp.

The Thursday Night Football Prime Video service is available to current business customers of Amazon and DirecTV, which also includes hotels, casinos, sportsbooks, and merchants at no additional cost.

Offering NFL games to business and residential clients is nothing new for DirecTV. The NFL’s out-of-market subscription package Sunday Ticket, whose rights are now held by the firm, will expire after the 2018 season.

Although Commissioner Roger Goodell stated in July that he anticipates the NFL would choose a streaming provider by the autumn, the league has yet to officially announce a new partner for Sunday Ticket. Disney, Apple, and Amazon all want to own the rights to Sunday Ticket, according to CNBC.
