Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO), a leading independent refiner in the United States, has announced its agreement to acquire a 100% equity interest in LYB Houston Hub Holdings LLC from LyondellBasell Industries. The transaction, valued at $320.5 million, will be executed through Valero’s wholly owned subsidiary, Valero Refining-Texas, L.P. This acquisition marks a significant step for Valero as it seeks to expand its refining operations along the U.S. Gulf Coast, an area where the company already has a substantial presence.
LYB Houston Hub Holdings owns a 700-acre facility located next to Valero’s existing Houston refinery in Texas. This site was previously used as a petroleum refining unit. Valero plans to restart operations at this facility with an initial capacity of approximately 165,000 barrels per day (BPD) of light sweet crude by the end of 2027. Light sweet crude is characterized by its low sulfur content, making it easier to refine compared to heavier crude types. This restart is expected to enhance Valero’s refining capacity and increase its crude processing volumes.
The strategic acquisition will allow Valero to integrate the newly acquired facility with its existing refining infrastructure, optimizing operations and potentially reducing costs. Beyond the initial restart of light crude processing capacity, Valero has the option to invest in infrastructure capable of processing heavy sour crude. Heavy sour crude typically trades at a discount to lighter crude, which could provide Valero with a cost advantage by lowering input costs.
Valero Energy is recognized as one of the leading refiners in the U.S., with advanced facilities capable of processing heavy sour crude from regions such as Venezuela and Canada. This capability provides Valero with a competitive edge, as it can capitalize on the cost advantages of processing discounted heavy sour crude. Recently, Valero reported a significant increase in third-quarter earnings, with adjusted earnings per share reaching $23.90, a 553% year-over-year increase, driven by stronger refining margins. The company also improved its financial position, ending the quarter with $9.84 billion in cash and cash equivalents and a total debt of $8.58 billion.
Valero currently holds a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), reflecting its strong market position and positive outlook. Other top-ranked stocks in the energy sector include PBF Energy (NYSE:PBF), HF Sinclair Corporation (NYSE:DINO), and Galp Energia SGPS SA (OTC:GLPEY), all of which also hold a Zacks Rank #1.
PBF Energy operates a diverse refining network with significant processing capacity and complexity. Its six refineries, including Delaware City and Paulsboro, have a combined throughput capacity of 1 million barrels per day, allowing the company to process a wide range of feedstocks and benefit from exposure to various regional markets. This diversified refining footprint supports higher margins and provides the company with resilience against regional market fluctuations.
HF Sinclair Corporation is a major player in the downstream energy sector, with operations spanning refining, renewables, marketing, lubricants, and midstream. Its earnings are primarily driven by a network of seven complex refineries located in the Mid-Continent, Southwest, Rocky Mountains, and Pacific Northwest. The outlook for HF Sinclair’s refining business remains positive due to tightening supplies and a supportive crack spread environment, which refers to the difference between the price of crude oil and the price of the refined products derived from it.
Galp Energia, a Portuguese energy firm, is involved in exploration and production, with notable success in the Mopane discovery in the Orange Basin off the coast of Namibia. This discovery enhances Galp’s global presence and positions it as a potential key oil producer in the region. The company also engages in refining and marketing of oil products and gas, as well as marketing and sales activities. These operations support Galp’s strategy to diversify its revenue streams and strengthen its market position.
