Twitter now promoting audio-oriented features on its platform
Twitter (NYSE:TWTR)
By incorporating podcasts, Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) is forging ahead in the competitive on-demand audio market that has seen significant investment in recent years.
Starting on Thursday, the firm claims, it will incorporate podcasts into a newly revamped Spaces tab, which is the area where it now hosts live audio chats.
Bringing people closer to the concepts, content, and artists they know and love is key to Twitter regardless of where the conversations take place, the firm said. “We know that certain talks demand longer than 280 characters,” it said.
The updated Spaces tab adds customizable hubs that categorize audio content by subject (such as news, music, or sports). Then, viewers can view a variety of recorded and live Spaces discussing the relevant subjects, as well as “the most well-liked and interesting podcasts from around the world.”
The experience will be informed by the company’s discovery statistics, so (for instance) a user who frequently engages with content from Vox Media on Twitter is likely to see Vox podcasts surface. This is Twitter’s solution to a difficult problem in the podcast industry.
The launch of the podcast-enhanced Spaces will initially only be available to an audience of English-speaking users on iOS and Android.
Endless Woes
In a largely upbeat market for communication services names, Twitter stock (TWTR) is down 0.6%; its news is currently dominated by legal disputes with presumed buyer Elon Musk and recent legal risks related to Peiter “Mudge” Zatko’s whistleblower disclosure. In a nearly 200-page disclosure to authorities, Zatko claims that the company is riddled with information security flaws and that in some cases, its executives have misled its own board and the public on the company’s condition.
