‘Stranger Things’ Keeps Ratings High, But Amazon Draws Streaming Eyes

Another week and another several billion minutes of one of Netflix’s (NASDAQ:NFLX) biggest blockbusters were streamed, despite the fact that the show just finished its fourth season a month ago.

Nielsen’s most recent weekly streaming ratings revealed that Stranger Things once again dominated online viewing in absolute numbers, with 4.8 billion minutes of total streaming time (for July 4-10). Since the premiere of the first episode of the fourth season on May 27, the show has been unbeatable in terms of viewership, and it has experienced a fresh uptick since the premiere of the finale of the season on July 1.

Even though Amazon Prime Video (NASDAQ:AMZN) made some noise with its newest blockbusters, it was still a cinch that it took the top spot for the week. The Terminal List, starring Chris Pratt and produced by Amazon, finished in second place behind Stranger Things (1.56B minutes streamed). And the conclusion of Amazon’s highly adult superhero series The Boys moved it up to fourth place with 1.086 billion minutes, placing it just below The Umbrella Academy on Netflix (NFLX), which has 1.279 billion minutes.

Many of the typical suspects when it comes to streaming on Netflix (NFLX) rounded out the top 10 overall, including No. 5, Sing 2 (839M minutes); No. 6, NCIS (837M minutes); No. 7, Grey’s Anatomy (697M minutes); No. 8, CoComelon (684M minutes); No. 9, Alone (which also aired on Hulu (NYSE:DIS) (CMCSA), 577M minutes); and No. 10, the movie Girl in the Picture, with 537M minutes.

The list of acquired series used to consist of 10 Netflix shows, but now the streaming leader is seeing some competition on that list from HBO Max. While Netflix’s NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, and CoComelon, as well as Netflix and Hulu’s Alone, topped that list, HBO Max (WBDFriends )’s was able to move up to the fifth spot, with 512 million minutes streamed. The Big Bang Theory was also ranked No. 9 on the list of most watched shows on HBO Max, with 383 million minutes.

The original series list was topped by the Netflix and Amazon shows that led the overall list, but it also featured Disney+ (DIS) at No. 7 with another week of Ms. Marvel (295M minutes streamed), and Hulu (DIS) (CMCSA) landed at No. 10 with Only Murders in the Building. Both of these services are owned by the same company (256M minutes).

Additionally, this week the movies chart featured a greater variety of titles. While Netflix (NFLX) films took the top four slots – Sing 2, Girl in the Picture, The Sea Beast (430M minutes), and The Man from Toronto (386M minutes) – Disney+ (DIS) hit No. 5 with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (362M minutes), and No. 6 with Encanto. Encanto was the highest-grossing original Disney+ film (286M minutes).

The Dark Knight Rises, which came in at number 8, was viewed for 243 million minutes combined on Netflix (NFLX) and HBO Max (WBD). In addition, the streaming service Hulu (DIS) (CMCSA) appeared in the film Leave No Trace (226M minutes).

This week, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) confirmed that it would combine HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single offering beginning in the summer of 2023. This development contributed to the dissemination of some news.
