Sievert from T-Mobile and Elon Musk will “reveal plans” for mobile connectivity

It appears that Elon Musk’s SpaceX and T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) will disagree about collaborating on mobile phone service.

Musk and Mike Sievert, the CEO of T-Mobile (TMUS), “will unveil plans to boost connection” on Thursday at a webcast on SpaceX.com, according to a statement from SpaceX on its official Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) feed. In Additional to stating that the event would start at 5 p.m. CT, no other information was provided.

Following a tweet from SpaceX announcing Musk and Seivert’s discussion, T-Mobile (TMUS) shares increased by 1.3%. SpaceX planned to utilize the nearly $1.7 billion it raised earlier this summer through an equity offering to support the construction of its Starship rocket project and Starlink satellite network.

On Thursday at 8 p.m. ET, SpaceX and T-Mobile will jointly host an event to reveal their “increasing connectivity” intentions. The presentation will take place at SpaceX’s Starbase launch facility in South Texas, where a Starship prototype was recently put onto the launchpad and will include SpaceX “chief engineer” Elon Musk and T-Mobile CEO and President Mike Sievert.

Beyond that, the two businesses haven’t said much, but Musk has hinted that the event would be “something extraordinary.” The Livestream connection is currently operational.

Both businesses have been attempting to increase their respective market share, with SpaceX promoting its satellite-based Starlink service and T-Mobile promoting its 5G-based Home Internet offering.

By collaborating in this area, T-Mobile and SpaceX may be able to deliver better service to rural locations farther from their cell towers. SpaceX will be providing backend connectivity.

It’s difficult to determine precisely what the two corporations intend to talk about, given how little has been disclosed. Maybe it’s some sort of spectrum announcement? A collaboration to improve the frequently overburdened satellite internet connections in rural areas provided by Starlink and the patchy home internet service offered by T-Mobile? An agreement with SpaceX for T-Mobile customers? We’ll have to watch the program to find out.
