Nvidia (NVDA) is undoubtedly on an impressive run, with its shares soaring 267% in the last year and 79% since the start of the year. Its graphics cards are sought after worldwide, much like precious gems, and CEO Jensen Huang commands attention on par with global leaders.
This spotlight on Huang will intensify as he opens Nvidia’s yearly GTC conference on March 18 with a two-hour keynote at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. Huang’s presentation is expected to unveil Nvidia’s roadmap and introduce its latest innovations.
Historically, GTC has been the stage for Nvidia’s major announcements. In 2022, it introduced the Hopper graphics architecture and the H100 GPU, now essential tools for AI development. This year, the buzz is around the successors to Hopper and the H100, likely triggering a new wave of demand for Nvidia’s offerings.
The upcoming architecture, codenamed Blackwell, and the B100 GPU, are projected to significantly enhance performance for running AI models such as OpenAI’s GPT-3. Nvidia’s ambitions for the B100 were hinted at during the Supercomputer 2023 conference, showcasing its potential superiority over the H100 and H200 cards.
The GTC event is also set to highlight advancements in Nvidia’s CUDA software, a platform that maximizes a GPU’s processing power for AI and other applications, cementing Nvidia’s appeal to developers and ensuring their continued preference for Nvidia products.
Moreover, Nvidia might reveal plans to launch the H20 AI chip for the Chinese market, designed as an alternative to the H100 and H200 chips amidst US restrictions on selling these advanced chips to China.
GTC 2024 promises to be a landmark event, featuring over 300 exhibitors and renowned speakers such as OpenAI’s COO Brad Lightcap, Meta’s VP of AI research Joelle Pineau, and Microsoft’s VP of generative AI Sébastien Bubeck. The conference will not only focus on Nvidia’s latest offerings but also include numerous other announcements and product launches from Nvidia and its partners, making it a key event for industry watchers and participants alike.
