In a groundbreaking move, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has announced the incorporation of a dedicated button, named the “Copilot key,” into its Windows keyboard, marking the first significant change to the device in almost three decades. This strategic addition revealed on Thursday, is a testament to the tech giant’s substantial investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and its commitment to integrating this transformative technology into its product offerings.
The Copilot key is a clear indication of Microsoft’s aspirations to usher in a new era of AI-enabled personal computers (PCs). These advanced machines are equipped with powerful chips capable of running large-language models and applications powered by AI directly on the device, as opposed to relying on cloud computing.
This move aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to infuse AI capabilities into its products, a trend that has been steadily gaining momentum across industries. Research firm Canalys predicts an acceleration in the adoption of AI-capable PCs, with notable growth expected from 2025 onwards.
The Copilot key will make its debut on select new Windows 11 PCs leading up to and during the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas later this month. Following this initial rollout, the key is expected to be made available for existing devices sometime after February this year, including upcoming Surface devices.
Launched in November, Copilot is a versatile AI service capable of performing various tasks, including summarizing text and facilitating virtual meetings. It seamlessly integrates with Microsoft’s suite of web and productivity applications, enhancing user experiences across a wide range of functions.
