Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is in the process of developing a slimmer iteration of the iPhone, set for release by 2025, as reported by The Information on Friday, citing insights from three individuals familiar with the project.
The anticipated thinner model is expected to carry a higher price tag compared to Apple’s iPhone Pro Max and is slated to debut alongside the iPhone 17 in September 2025, according to the report.
Based in Cupertino, California, Apple is currently exploring various designs for the device, internally dubbed D23, which may incorporate the company’s latest-generation processor, likely named A19, the report further detailed.
This anticipated overhaul underscores Apple’s imperative to enhance the iPhone, its flagship product, amid stiff competition from Honor and Huawei in China and Samsung Electronics globally.
In the first three months of 2024, Samsung led the smartphone market with a 20.8% share, followed by Apple’s 17.3% market share, according to data from research firm International Data Corporation (IDC).
For the fiscal second quarter, Apple witnessed a 10.5% decline in iPhone sales, amounting to $45.96 billion.
Moreover, Apple intends to discontinue its less expensive iPhone Plus model and is planning to introduce a more budget-friendly iPhone, serving as the successor to its iPhone SE, in the spring of 2025, as per the report.
These developments follow closely after Apple’s recent unveiling of its latest iPad Pro, featuring a new chip tailored for artificial intelligence computing. This move signifies Apple’s efforts to catch up with its Big Tech counterparts in the race to dominate emerging technology.
