The Center for Responsible Seafood will honor Dr. Motosaku Fujinaga and Robins McIntosh for charting the course in shrimp farming and will award four shrimp-farmer scholarships.
HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam, July 19, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The shrimp farming industry will honor a shrimp-farming pioneer, celebrate a shrimp culture leader, and foster sustainable shrimp industry growth when it convenes later this month at the New World Saigon Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for the 2023 Shrimp Summit, produced by The Center for Responsible Seafood.
Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to two members of the shrimp farming industry who have dedicated decades to tackling challenges and advancing progress: renowned shrimp culture expert Robins McIntosh, Executive Vice President of Charoen Pokphand Group Co., Ltd. (presented by Dr. George Chamberlain), and Dr. Motosaku Fujinaga (awarded posthumously), known as “the Father of Shrimp Farming,” to be accepted by his son, Koichi Fujinaga, and presented by Dr. I. Chiu Liao. Dr. Liao, “the Father of Penaeus monodon Farming, worked closely with Dr. Fujinaga as a young postdoctoral fellow and later catalyzed shrimp farming throughout Asia.
“With the attendees’ collective knowledge, experience, and desire to tackle challenges in shrimp farming, progress at the Summit is assured,” predicts George Chamberlain, Summit Chair and President of TCRS. “Not only will today’s experts be there to chart the course ahead, but we will be inspired by a brilliant leader of the past, and we will most certainly discover leaders of the future.”
To bolster continued growth and advancements in shrimp farming, TCRS has awarded four Summit scholarships to support shrimp farmers who could not afford to attend the Summit in person. The recipients include farmers from Bangladesh, India, and Vietnam (two) who are involved in vannamei and monodon farming. The farmer scholarships are sponsored by Aegis, Stapimex, and IDH.
“Every farmer has insights, observations, and ideas to contribute,” says Chamberlain, “and everyone has an important role to play in achieving long-term, sustainable growth.”
The virtual and in-person Summit will host retailers, importers, exporters, processors, feed companies, producers, NGOs, and government representatives to tackle current challenges in shrimp farming, focusing its content on critical topics: Global Production & Markets, Disease Management, Shrimp Breeding, Growout Intensification, Sustainable Feeds, Improver Programs, Expanding the Market, Investment, and Innovations. TCRS is joined by co-hosts Vietnam Department of Fisheries, the Vietnam Fisheries Society (VINAFIS), the International Collaborating Centre for Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS), and the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA).
Local enthusiasm for the Summit has been strong, with sponsorships and support from Vietnam’s agricultural, seafood, and shrimp industry-leading organizations, including Thai Union, Minh Phu, Grobest, and Quoc Viet Foods.
A reduced registration fee of US $700 is available for Vietnam-based shrimp industry professionals. Those who wish to attend at the special rate of US $700 should contact Laura Rose, TCRS Project Manager. Attendees and non-attendees can contribute to discussions and access relevant resources before, during, and after the Summit in the TCRS Online Community.
