Cloostermans-Huwaert
The firm said on Friday that Cloostermans, a manufacturer of robots and warehousing equipment, was acquired by Amazon.
Employees from Cloostermans will join Amazon Robotics, a department under Amazon tasked with automating various warehouse processes.
According to CNBC, e-commerce giant Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has acquired Cloostermans, a manufacturer of mechatronics systems with offices in Belgium, in order to expand its robotics activities. There was no mention of the transaction sum.
Since 2019, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has used Cloostermans’ technology to assist with moving, stacking, and packaging objects for client orders that are heavy or awkward to move around.
About 200 Cloostermans’ employees will join Amazon Global Robotics, which is expanding its presence in Europe after acquiring Kiva Systems, a producer of warehouse robots, for $775 million ten years ago.
In its facilities, Amazon keeps installing new equipment. The company launched Proteus, its first completely autonomous mobile robot, in June. Proteus is a package-transporting machine. Other robots have been put to use that can sort and move packages.
Ian Simpson, the Vice President of Global Robotics, said, “Amazon’s investments in robots and technology are enabling how we construct a better and safer workplace for our people and deliver for our customers.” He added, “At Amazon, we look forward to welcoming Cloostermans and are excited to see what we can do together as we continue to widen and accelerate the robotics and technology we design, engineer, and deploy across our operations.”
Outlook
There has been discussion about the possibility of warehouse robotics increasing safety. According to a Center for Investigative Reporting analysis, Amazon’s warehouses with robots have greater injury rates than those in facilities without automation.
