In a significant move towards sustainability, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center has announced the completion and activation of a large-scale solar energy system. This installation, which spans approximately 3.5 acres atop the resort’s convention center, was unveiled on October 21, 2026, coinciding with World Energy Saving Day. The solar array consists of 4,696 panels and is expected to produce nearly 3.4 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually, marking a substantial investment in the resort’s energy efficiency and sustainability strategy.

The solar installation is designed to meet up to 20 percent of the resort’s electricity needs during peak periods and reduce reliance on external electricity by offsetting up to 50 percent of purchased power. This initiative is part of a broader energy strategy that includes a combined heat and power system (Cogen) and advanced building efficiency technologies, aimed at increasing on-site energy generation and reducing emissions.

Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc., the owner of Gaylord National Resort, is behind this investment, which also aligns with Marriott International’s sustainability goals. Mark Fioravanti, President and CEO of Ryman Hospitality Properties, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “This project is an important example of how we are partnering with Marriott International to invest in initiatives that support our shared conservation goals and create long-term value for our shareholders.” The solar array, operational since June 2026, has already generated approximately 495,316 kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity, equivalent to powering 48 average U.S. households for a year, while avoiding 333 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Looking ahead, the system is projected to prevent around 2,285 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and generate enough energy to power 331 average U.S. homes, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s methodology. The project was developed in partnership with REV Energy Ventures, whose CEO, Jeff Bedard, noted that the solar project exemplifies how large hospitality properties can integrate renewable energy solutions.

Gaylord National’s energy strategy has been evolving since 2018, with the Cogen system already meeting over 75 percent of the resort’s energy needs by generating electricity and repurposing waste energy for heating. Derek Brauner, the resort’s director of engineering, highlighted that the addition of solar power enhances their existing energy efficiency framework. “By generating electricity on-site, capturing thermal energy that would otherwise be wasted, and continuously monitoring our building systems, we are able to operate more efficiently,” Brauner explained.

Beyond environmental benefits, this dual energy approach enhances energy resilience, offering greater control over operating costs and ensuring reliable energy production for the resort, which accommodates numerous guests and events annually. The solar and Cogen systems are integral to Gaylord National’s broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on energy efficiency, resource conservation, and long-term sustainability.

In addition to energy initiatives, the resort is committed to waste reduction and community impact. It partners with the Food Recovery Network to donate surplus food, contributing over 115,000 pounds of food to local organizations and providing approximately 30,000 meals annually. Other sustainability efforts include energy-saving technologies, rooftop beehives, an on-site herb garden, and sustainable sourcing commitments. Waste reduction is further supported through single-stream recycling, paperless billing, and the elimination of single-use toiletry bottles, along with recycling up to 170,000 pounds of cardboard monthly.

Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, located in National Harbor, Maryland, is the largest non-gaming hotel and convention center on the East Coast. Owned by Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc. and part of Marriott International’s portfolio, the resort opened in 2008 and features nearly 2,000 guest rooms and extensive meeting spaces.

Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc. (NYSE: RHP) is a leading real estate investment trust specializing in upscale convention center resorts. Its portfolio includes several major properties across the United States, managed by Marriott International, and encompasses a wide range of entertainment and hospitality services.
