In a recent market downturn, several healthcare stocks, including Azenta, Myriad Genetics, Moderna, Repligen, and PacBio, experienced notable declines. This decline was part of a broader sell-off in growth equities that require significant capital investment. The sell-off was driven by rising bond yields, which have reduced market appetite for riskier investments.

According to financial analysts at CNBC, the increase in Treasury yields has placed substantial pressure on long-duration assets. Higher interest rates increase the discount rate applied to future corporate earnings, which in turn decreases the present value of future cash flows. This dynamic is particularly impactful for early-stage drug and life sciences companies, whose high market valuations are often justified by the promise of future earnings.

Moreover, CNBC analysts pointed out that investors are reassessing the implications of these elevated interest rates on economic growth and the ability of companies to service their debts. This reassessment is especially concerning for clinical-stage healthcare firms that frequently rely on debt markets to finance their research and development activities. These companies often have to continuously tap into debt markets to fund their operations, making them vulnerable to changes in interest rates.

As a result, the market witnessed a broader flight to safety, where concerns over inflation were temporarily overshadowed. Investors began to aggressively exit these high-risk, high-multiple healthcare assets, redirecting their capital towards the relative stability offered by the Treasury market and blue-chip equities. This shift in investment strategy reflects a preference for more stable and less risky investments during times of economic uncertainty.

Among the stocks affected by this market shift, Azenta (NASDAQ:AZTA) saw a 7.9% decline, Myriad Genetics (NASDAQ:MYGN) fell by 5.5%, Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) decreased by 11.1%, Repligen (NASDAQ:RGEN) dropped 6.2%, and PacBio (NASDAQ:PACB) experienced a 13% fall. These declines highlight the sensitivity of these stocks to changes in market conditions, particularly those related to interest rates and economic growth prospects.

In-Depth Look at PacBio

PacBio has been known for its stock volatility, with the company experiencing 86 movements greater than 5% in the past year. However, the recent decline is notable even for PacBio, indicating a significant shift in market perception of the company’s business prospects.

Just 11 days prior to this downturn, PacBio’s stock had risen by 9.9% following the announcement of a partnership between EpiSign Inc. and Geneyx Genomex Ltd. This collaboration aims to integrate genomic and epigenomic analysis for rare disease interpretation, utilizing data from PacBio’s HiFi sequencing technology. The partnership enhances DNA methylation episignature analysis for over 300 disorders, benefiting Geneyx customers analyzing data from PacBio HiFi, Illumina, and Oxford Nanopore sequencing.

Despite these positive developments, PacBio’s stock has declined by 5.7% since the start of the year. Currently trading at $1.74 per share, it is 39.5% below its 52-week high of $2.87 recorded in October 2026. An investment of $1,000 in PacBio shares five years ago would now be valued at just $71.43, illustrating the challenges faced by investors in this volatile market segment.

In the broader context, the recent market movements underscore the impact of macroeconomic factors, such as interest rates, on the valuation of growth stocks. Investors are increasingly cautious about the long-term prospects of companies that are heavily reliant on future earnings and debt financing. This caution is reflected in the shift towards more stable investments, as evidenced by the movement of capital into the Treasury market and blue-chip stocks.
